We haven’t yet hit the throes of winter weather, which means it’s an excellent time for people to start thinking about weatherizing their homes.

For Howard County residents who meet certain income requirements, the Community Action Council of Howard County is offering free weatherization services to help keep energy costs low and temperatures comfortable once temperatures drop.

Through the federally-funded Weatherization Assistance Program, local contractors will perform household repairs and upgrades on hot waters systems, insulation, light fixtures and parts of the house to increase efficiency.

“Across the state and in Howard County there are families who, for the first time, feel challenged and financially stretched,” County Executive Ken Ulman said in a statement. 

“Weatherization services not only benefit residents by helping to cut energy costs, but they have also benefited local contractors who are able to get back to work and fulfill a need in their communities.”

Residents interested in applying for assistance must be homeowners and meet certain income requirements.

Applications must be completed by mail or in person at Community Action Council, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, second floor or at the North Laurel Multiservice Center, 9900 Washington Blvd. in Laurel.
