(UPDATED 1/2) Police Identify Woman Who Died in New Year's Eve Crash in Ellicott City

A 24-year-old Howard County woman was killed.

Maryland State Police have identified the victims in a New Year's Eve crash in Ellicott City that left one person dead and sent two to the hospital.

Ashley Marie Matthews, 24, was killed. Trevell Brooks, 22, and Brandon Gaskins, 27, were injured and taken to University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Police have not released the hometowns of the victims, but court records list Matthews as living in Cooksville as of this fall.

State Police say Matthews was driving a black Ford Expedition westbound on Interstate 70 near Bethany Lane at about 3:31 p.m. when she tried to pass a vehicle ahead of her. She swerved, according to police, lost control and her vehicle rolled over.

Matthews was ejected and would be pronounced dead at the scene.

Brooks was taken to Shock Trauma by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. Gaskins was flown to that hospital and is listed in serious condition.

Police say they think alcohol and speed played a part in the accident.

According to court records, Matthews was fined $90 in September for driving 50 mph in a 30 mph zone.

This was the 16th death in 2010 from a motor vehicle accident in Howard County.
