Two Columbia Teens Struck by Car During Wednesday's Rainstorm
Preliminary investigation shows pedestrian error to be a contributing factor.
Two Columbia teenagers were taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore Wednesday afternoon after they were struck by a car on Cedar Lane, according to a press release from the Howard County Police Department.
The two pedestrians were crossing Cedar Lane near Grand Banks Road at about 4:51 p.m. Wednesday when they were struck by a 2005 Lexus ES330 driven by Ellicott City resident Mary Koutrelakos, 79.
The pedestrians, Erica Renee Butler, 15, and Latesha Monica Carter, 15, both of Columbia, were taken to the trauma center, where they were listed as "stable" on Thursday, according to the statement.
Koutrelakos was not injured.
Preliminary investigation shows that pedestrian error was a contributing factor, the statement said. It was also raining heavily at the time.
PFC. Neil White is continuing to investigate, according to police.

So if the driver were not elderly, would you post her age?? Sounds like age discrimination to me and an assumption that the elderly cannot drive. In fact, teenagers make worse drivers than the elderly, and also worse pedestrians (at least in this case)!

Deborah, you must have stopped reading when at the point where the age was posted and missed the part where it stated "Preliminary investigation shows that pedestrian error was a contributing factor". Go and read any article regarding, theft, vehicle accidents, etc... ALL ages are printed.

I hope they are both ok, And its not age discrimination if they know the persons age then thats what they put just go look at all the other articles, and you cant say teens are worse pedestrians and drivers just because of this, if you ask me its equal now a days, every where you go your getting cut off or someones driving WAY TO SLOW or to fast. Its only going to get worse people that are way to old to drive are still driving getting lost holding up traffic in the fast lane and way to many young people are getting there licence and making bad decisions. And no iam not saying 79 is to old maybe she should have payed attention a bit more

Deborah, Thanks for the comment. If provided with the information, we print the ages of all people involved in crashes and other incidents. The ages of all three people involved in this situation were listed. It's fairly routine to do so.

Well I am the mother of one of the girls that were hit. My daughter is home and resting. Mrs. Koutrelakos or anyone from her family has tried to reach out to the young ladies. I understand the conditon of the weather but it was a group of 5 kids and you really 3. the officer said the lady was travling 25mph. ome on no matter what your age is you can see a group of kids. Yes I am standing up for my daughter and her friend if it was truly an accident reach out and try and see the teenagers are ok instead of going to your son function at the hospital in which you were on your way too since he is a physician.

Hopefully, you will consider using either a spell check or grammar feature before you leave a comment in a public forum next time. When your post is littered with mistakes, it devalues your opinion/argument. Glad your child is well, but wondering why you would think that the person responsible should contact you. In addition, you made a point of stating the woman was on her way to the hospital to attend a function involving her son, who happens to be a physician. Is that really relevant considering that these children were not using the footbridge to cross the road?
