Today in Columbia: Rain, a Meeting, a Homework Assignment and the Death of a President

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy is one of my earliest childhood memories.

Meeting Tonight:

The meeting is expected to draw residents who plan to speak out on both sides of the women-only program program recently launched by the association.

More Homework:

Now that I've stopped bugging you about sharing your Thanksgiving traditions with me, I'll give you another assignment.

Take pictures of your Thanksgiving gathering and send them to me at marge.neal@patch.com

I'll post them in an online gallery for all to enjoy.

This Day in History:

I got my first civics lesson on this day 48 years ago.

Sitting in the first-grade classroom of Mrs. Higgins at Mars Estates Elementary School in Baltimore County, my classmates and I heard the news — via Ernest Neutzel, a sixth-grade teacher — that President Kennedy had been shot.

In those days, first-graders reported to school pretty much with clean slates for brains. There were no kindergarten classes at my school, and preschool and other types of organized day care were unheard of, at least in my neighborhood.

We showed up knowing nothing — no letters, numbers, colors or any of the other basic building blocks of learning now being taught to babies.

Upon hearing the news, we looked to Mrs. Higgins and asked what a president was.

It was a pretty terrible way to learn of my country's greatest leadership position, and it's a day I'll never forget.
