Police said the 17-year-old student was struck by a vehicle while walking in a crosswalk.

A 17-year-old River Hill High School student is now in stable condition after being struck by a car while walking to school on Linden Linthicum Lane Tuesday morning, said police.

The student, Matthew R. Curley, 17, of the 5800 block of Clipper Lane, Clarksville, was initially transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in serious condition Tuesday morning, police said.

His status was upgraded to stable later Tuesday morning, police said.

Police said Curley was struck by a 1998 Honda Accord that was traveling westbound on Linden Linthicum Lane around 7:30 a.m. near Little Bells Row. Curley was walking in the crosswalk, according to police.

The driver of the Honda, who stopped at the scene, and a passenger, were not injured, said police.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, police said. No charges have been filed.

River Hill High School principal Nick Novak sent out a letter to parents Tuesday afternoon notifying them of the accident.

"Although no students witnessed the accident, some students did see the police and EMTs responding to the accident and may be upset and concerned about the welfare of their fellow student," wrote Novak. "In addition, there was a lot of speculation on Twitter and Facebook about the accident. Please caution your children that they may hear rumors on social media that may not be accurate and let them know that our school support team will be available in the guidance office to assist students if they need someone to talk to."

This is the second serious accident in less than a week in Howard County involving a high school student.

In Ellicott City, a Mt. Hebron High School student, Jeffrey Sinclair, 18, remains in critical condition after his vehicle was struck by a Mack Truck as it was leaving the Mt. Hebron High parking lot. Four other Mt. Hebron students in the car at the time were not seriously injured.

People in Howard County blow through crosswalks like they aren't even there! At least once a day I have need to walk between our office building and another building on our campus. This walk requires crossing well traveled road IN A CROSSWALK. I can't tell you how many times I've nearly been hit. I've even gotten some pretty rude hand gestures and had horns blare, for being where I had every right to be. Slow down people...if it's a mad race to get to work on time every morning, perhaps you should consider LEAVING EARLIER! If someone is in the crosswalk, you MUST stop until they've made it to the opposite curb. While visiting in CA, I would hurry walking across the street. I was told that I didn't need to do that...that the drivers would wait for me to cross. It was true and I remain stunned!

This is serious. Is there any way you could snap a photo of this with your phone?

Assuming this is a crosswalk that's not located at an intersection with a traffic light you should petition your property owner to place one of those yellow yield to pedestrian reminders in the center of the road or post a permanent sign next to the cross walk.

I've never had a problem with crosswalks that are located at intersections.

This crosswalk problem seems to be universal. I was almost hit by a car while crossing a street in London last March, I had to run to the curb and I am a 76 year old granny!

Yes, there are distracted drivers and people in a hurry. That being said, shouldn't we all be looking both ways before we cross??? It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you don't get hit by a vehicle!

This cross walk is VERY clearly marked with a yellow crosswalk sign on both sides of the road and the pained lines on the pavement. The reason I haven't been hit is because I DO look both ways before crossing. The fact that the crosswalk is on a slight curve in the road, it makes it hard to see if something's coming until you have taken a step or two out into the crosswalk. I don't step out until I know I can cross, but there are several places for cars to enter the road very near the crosswalk, making it a challenge. All I ask is that people, those driving and those walking be careful and follow the signs.
