Readers' Choice: Charter Deli for a Sandwich
Charter Deli gobbled up a large majority in this week's vote for favorite sandwich in Columbia
Charter Deli is located in a nondescript office building in Charter Plaza off Hickory Ridge Road. But for the community around it, it's clearly a lunchtime favorite.
On Friday, it was packed with young students and workers chowing down on nicely sized sandwiches such as its Big Ben Club and hot reuben. Owner Tom Nash, who opened the deli in 2002, said the Big Ben Club, a combination of bacon, lettuce, tomato and turkey or ham is their customers' favorite sandwich.
"I like to say I provide an excellent deli sandwich," said Nash, "It's fresh and I'm here seven days a week cutting the meat and preparing the sandwiches."
In our vote, the Deli garnered a whopping 58 percent of the vote, for a total of 117 votes. Charter Deli has also been awarded best deli for four straight years by Howard Magazine.
"I've been quite fortunate," said Nash, "Tell your readers I said thank you!"
No problem, Tom. You make an excellent sandwich.

Lakeside's exceptional personal service is second to none! Great "mom & pop" operation vs. larger chains...when you're known on a 1st name basis and the owner knows your order - that's SERVICE! Keeps me going back...

I don't know why Charter has jumped ahead. But it is situated just off the HCC campus & behind the hospital. All I know is once Charter opened, we stopped going to Subway!
