The Howard County Delegation is giving residents a chance to voice their opinions on proposed legislation that would change the way members of the school board are chosen.
To address what some see as a lack of racial, ethnic and geographic diversity on the Board, legislation proposed by Del. Frank Turner would have five of the seven members elected by council district and two appointed by the county executive.
The local delegation is at the George Howard Building, listening to residents now.

Very nice, thank you. It made it possible for those of us that could not attend to hear/see what transpired at the meeting.

I was there for the first hour and 45 minutes. It appeared there was an overwhelming opposition to the proposed changes. In that entire time I saw 3 people testify in complete support... and 2 people testify for five district elections but with two more at-large. Everyone else was completely opposed and came from multiple ethnicities and backgrounds. Let's see if our representatives listen to their constituants... or sign the end of their careers.

I am strongly in favor of the Turner bill but I couldn't make it to the hearing. It's pointless to complain that the hearing was "advertised" since everyone that is opposed, apparently made it to the hearing. If anything, the people in favor of it missed out on the hearing notice.

FYI -- Because this was mentioned in the live blog around 8:25 and in one of the comments... the session was streamed live online, and the recording is now available as well.
Admittedly, it was a little hard to find, as it was on the County Council's Watch Us page: http://cc.howardcountymd.gov/TwoThirdsIframe.aspx?ID=6442458802

Thanks a lot for posting that, Jeff. Typically, hearings such as these are listed on the calendar section of the County's website; I think that's where the confusion was. Those videos are a great resource.
