Howard County General Lauded for Emergency Care

Matt Saxton of Dorsey's Search is impressed with the hospital's "caring and professional environment."

Dear Editor,

I can’t remember leaving an emergency room thinking that my experience there was pleasant. Nor have I been motivated to praise a hospital by writing a letter to the editor.

Until now.

I had the unfortunate need to visit the ER department at Howard County General Hospital in late January. Even more unfortunate was that I needed to go there twice in the same week. But as agonizing as was the injury that forced me to go that route, much of that pain subsided with the graciously pleasant bedside manner and professionalism of the physicians, nurses, aides and other HCGH staff members who were involved in my care.

This kind of praise carries some weight coming from me. I’ve lived all over the country and have been plagued with a number of illnesses and injuries that have forced me to visit, by my count, about 20 different ERs for myself in the past 35 years. From complications with Crohn’s Disease, severe allergic reactions, a herniated disc and even a dog bite once, my treatment experiences have been quite broad. A back injury brought me to HCGH.

It was, by far, the best ER experience I can recall. The waiting room was full, but I was triaged quickly-yet didn’t feel rushed. On both occasions, I was “fast-tracked” to ensure my wait time was minimal. Caring, competent and concerned physicians' assistants and nurses (different ones each night) handled my care.

The health care providers ran appropriate tests, administered helpful medications and offered targeted referrals to someone who is still somewhat of a newbie to Columbia.

But what was most impressive to me is that my needs were taken seriously. Sometimes that reassurance is the best medicine of all.

So, to those of you who were involved in my treatment, and to the others who help to foster the caring and professional environment at HCGH, I’d like to say thank you. I rest easier knowing the people of Columbia have you in our community.
