FDA Official Charged in North Laurel Soliciting Prostitution Sting
Dr. William Howard Maisel is facing charges in a soliciting prostitution sting, days after his FDA center was revealed to have been spying on employees.
A high-ranking official in the Food and Drug Administration was among 10 men arrested July 13 in a soliciting prostitution sting in North Laurel, reports FDAWeb.com.
Dr. William Maisel, deputy director for the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, is facing four charges of soliciting prostitution after Howard County police conducted an undercover sting in North Laurel.
Howard County police said Maisel approached a plain-clothed female police officer and offered money for sex.
Maisel, who is scheduled to appear in Howard County District Court on Sept. 20, is the deputy director and chief scientist of the CDRH, which has come under scrutiny for allegedly spying on employees and firing whistleblowers, according to the New York Times.
The alleged surveillance also led to a list of "targets" who had a history of criticizing the FDA, and the list ranged from reporters to Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and President Obama, reports the Times.
FDA officials defended the surveillance as being limited to five scientists, in order to determine whether confidential documents about medical device safety were being leaked, according to the Times.
Patch visited the Kensington residence listed for Maisel in court documents, but the only occupant of the house denied any connection to Maisel and refused to comment on the solicitation charges.
Erica Jefferson, spokesperson for the FDA, said she could not comment on the solicitation charges against Maisel.

With the salary Maisel is making (one of the joys of public records, federal employees salaries can be found here: http://php.app.com/fed_employees10/search.php), I'm sure he has a great lawyer lined up and will be let off with a slap on the wrist.

There's no such thing as a slap on the wrist when you're arrested for soliciting a prostitute. Your life is over - definitely your reputation. Your wife knows, your kids know, your family and in-laws know and you might be fired. It's a matter of public record for all future employers and it'll likely pop up on page 1 of a search.
Life, as he knows it, is now over.

How many undercover stings will it take to realize that N. Laurel IS a prostitution ring!? We all know the motels where they are arrested. It isn't rocket surgery, folks.

Better yet, how about we legalize it, regulate it, tax it, and move the hell on to more important things.

I agree with you, Eric S. one hundred per cent. Maryland needs more tax money and what a great way to get tax money by legalizing prostition and taxing it.

Even when it is regulated, legalizing prostitution tends to lead to more (illegal) human trafficking including the trafficking of minors. This has been shown in places like Amsterdam.
